Shades Apart - Eyewitness
Grade: B-
By Jess Redmon
Shades Apart fuse melodic pop style with a punk edge on their latest, "Eyewitness."
Sugar-coated melodies and optimistic vocals meet a post-punk bass and guitar
backdrop. "Stranger by the Day" mixes ska-tainted guitar lines with an unthreatening and
enjoyable pop-punk hybrid. The songs on "Eyewitness" are really nicely written and
unassuming, they add a little more pop sensibility than most standard punk
contemporaries. The first single and standout track is "Valentine." This subtle and
heartfelt ballad isn't anything special by its appearance, but has that quaint power-ballad
quality and that little something extra. "Eyewitness" isn't much of anything new, but it
does bring together a collection of well-written pop-punk numbers and power-ballads
that come off genuine and enjoyable.
