Live - The Distance To Here
Grade: C+
By Jess Redmon
Live's 4th LP "The Distance To Here" attempts inspiration and feel-good to mixed
results. The band, who has always had a natural spirituality and sense of importance,
takes a directed and unnatural approach to their latest album. "Run To Water" is a well-written and enjoyable song, but incredibly blatant in trying to be an anthem for their
embracement of love and freedom. "Sun" and "The Dolphin's Cry" are more natural and
vibing rockers that play on what Live does best, rock with unmatched emotion and
realism. It's not that "The Distance To Here" is a bad record, it is quite enjoyable in parts,
but behind the songs and the band seems to be an incredibly contrived motive to create
uplifting and inspiring songs. The record, through a lot of it, seems incredibly fake. Live
have always played what was natural to them, always coming off incredibly genuine, but
their latest undertaking comes off as an album that attempts to put a shallow smile on
pre-millennium tensions.
