Citizen King - Mobile Estates
Grade: B-
By Jess Redmon
Citizen King plays funky punk DJ in their elusive and quite interesting "Mobile
Estates." Imagine a house-style DJ trippin' on a controlled-chaotic splattering of folk,
funk, punk, electronic and "what the hell is that anyway?" to keep your mind glazing over
the colorful textures. Much in the way of Sprung Monkey's "Mr. Funny Face," Citizen
King encompass a fundamental medley of post-punk, hip-hop, electronic and just about
everything else you can think of. Far superior than their stereotypical, watered down first
single, "Better Days (And The Bottom Drops Out)," Citizen King isn't a run-of-the-mill
ska/punk band as their single suggests. "Long Walk Home" bends funky turntables,
twangy riffs and a whole collection of electronically morphed backbeats. "Salt Bag Spill"
trips on ultra-funky phat beats, folky house textures and hot rhythms to keep your
attention fixed. Many have compared Citizen King to Beck, and they're certainly not far
off, but the perspective of Citizen King is just a bit different. Eclectic and very surprising
to most who hear "Better Days (And The Bottom Drops Out" first, Citizen King project a
funky trip into the night on "Mobile Estates."
