John Parish And Polly Jean Harvey
The acerbic and seductive music of British invader Polly Jean Harvey has rocked fans and critics,
who call her band, PJ Harvey, "wry, bruising, ironic, raw." The band first got together in Somerset,
England in 1991 and released their first single, "Dress." By the time a second single was released
on the indie label Too Pure, PJ Harvey had gathered a devoted following in Britain. They eagerly
awaited the band's first album, Dry, which was released by Island Records in June of 1992 in the
states. Harvey's next album, Rid of Me brought her to the main stage in the U.S. in 1993. Fans
devoured the angry yet decidedly human music in droves, and she went on a world tour in May of
that year, bringing the music through Europe and the states before going to Japan, with the final
two shows in Wembley Stadium in London. After these shows, Harvey signed with Principle
Management, based in Dublin, who also manage U2. In the fall of 1993, Harvey released Demos,
introducing herself as a solo act, after the rest of the trio moved on to other projects. In 1995, she
released To Bring You My Love, which critics from Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly called
her most ambitious album so far.
