April March
Born Elinor Blake in New York City on April 20, 1965, April March had two primary interests while
growing up: art and the French language. After working several jobs as an animator, she formed
her first band, the Pussywillows, in 1987. Unable to play any instruments well, she was forced to
hum most of her compositions to her bandmates to write songs. When the band broke up in 1991,
March worked briefly as an animator on the first groundbreaking episodes of "The Ren and Stimpy
Show" and formed a new band, the Shitbirds. While playing with the Shitbirds, April March
launched her solo career. Influenced heavily by the '60s French pop sound and singing in both
French and English she released the Gainsbourgsion album in France in 1994 followed by Chick
Habit on Sympathy for the Record Industry Records in 1995. In 1996 she left the Shitbirds and
formed the Haves, simultaneously releasing her third solo album, Paris in April. March's next two
appearances were collaborations: the first with the Makers on April March Sings Along with the
Makers (1997), the second with Los Cincos on April March and Los Cincos (1998). April March's
latest album, Chrominance Decoder, was released on February 2, 1999. -Joe Hauler
