New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
New Orleans LA USA - April 28 - May 07 2000
Info Phone: 504-941-5100
A two-weekend event in the city where the spring comes early, the beer flows
freely and the dancing comes easy, Jazzfest is the American music lovers'
rendezvous. This is a blow-out extravaganza offering music and culture galore.
Acts ranging from jazz, zydeco and Afro-Caribbean to folk, blues and gospel
appear on nearly a dozen stages.
Bigger crowds show up each year from all over North America, Europe and East
Asia, for what has become, arguably, the most diverse music festival on the
continent. In fact, though attendance is now pushing half a million, this may
still be one of the best weekends of music and other diversions that you can
find.
As you might have guessed, there's a lot more than jazz here. The Fais Do Do
Stage features Cajun (the traditional music of rural white Louisiana) and
zydeco (the traditional music of black, Creole Louisiana) music.
The Ray Ban/WWL and Polaroid/WB 38 stages feature bigger names like the
Neville Brothers, Van Morrison and Dave Matthews Band. It's pure jazz at the
WWOZ tent; at Congo Square there's African, Caribbean and R&B and at the
Rhodes Gospel Tent you'll hear the songs of the heavens. With so much to choose
from, and so many good performers playing at the same time, it is often
impossible to resist the impulse to sprint between songs from one stage to the
next.
A similar problem occurs at night. While the festival's
nightly attractions are often held in arena settings that are neither intimate
nor cheap, there are more good bands in the city's bars and clubs than you'll
know what to do with. From bowling alleys (Mid City Lanes) to record stores
(Tower) to the bars of the Marigny District (Cafe Brazil, Cafe Istanbul, the
Saturn Bar) or Uptown (Jimmy's, the Maple Leaf, Tipatina's), music is
everywhere, and it goes on all night. Many of the performers who play the
festival during the day particpate in informal (and formal) jam sessions during
the night. For instance, you might see Art Neville at the Jazz Festival with
the Neville Brothers, and then see him that night in Tipitina's jamming with
the Funky Meters. There is often no closing time in these bars, and as the sun
comes up and the sweat of the swampy bottom of the American night starts to
bead on your head, the possibilities only get bigger.

Chicago Jazz Festival
Chicago IL USA - August 30 - September 03 2000
Info Phone: 312-427-1676
The Windy City rounds out the summer with the nation's largest free jazz
festival (it also happens to be the oldest of Chicago's free summer music
festivals). Nearly 300,000 spectators take in 27 acts during lakefront concerts
and smaller club gigs over the three-day run.
Before the festival officially begins, buses take visitors around to various
jazz clubs throughout the city. Though there is a ticketed indoor show on
Thursday night, by then the city's hot jazz clubs are buzzing with live music
from performers who come in from all over the world. As far as venues go, the
Grant Park site may be one of the nation's most interesting, sandwiched between
giant skyscrapers and the beauty of Lake Michigan. By contrast, Jackson Stage
provides a more intimate setting and can often be the place where lucky
listeners will catch the rare hidden gems of the festival.
Prepare for a welcome assault on the senses that makes the
Chicago Jazz Festival one-of-a-kind!
