Readers take on millennium challenge
Admittedly, the question was a bit ill-defined, but it came as no
surprise that we got a flood of responses to our millennium jazz poll
from last time around.
We wanted to know this: What jazz recordings are most
representative of the 20th century?
Here we go — some folks provided long lists that had to be edited
(but they made for fascinating reading). Wish there was more
space:
Chuck Sentance: "Lester Young, 'K.C. Sessions,' 1944. He
never sounded better." Chuck added some others, including Errol
Garner's classic 1955 album, "Concert by the Sea."

Featured Artist: Chris Washburne and the Syotos Band
CD Title: Nuyorican Nights
Year: 1999
Record Label: Jazzheads
Review: Chris Washburne and the Syotos Band are some of the best musicians playing Latin jazz on the New York
scene. For those who didn't make it down to Puerto Rico this season, pick up NUYORICAN NIGHTS and you'll
know the feeling when it hits you!! The group's debut features compositions and arrangements by the inimitable
Clare Fisher and by group members Harve Swartz, John Walsh, the wonderful Ole Mathisen, and the great
trombonist Chris Washburne. Internationally renown trumpeter, Ray Vega, pianist Barry Olsen, drummer Vince
Cherico, percussionists Wilson "Chembo" Corniel and Bobby Sanabria round out the aggregation with superb
playing honed during their weekly gigs at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in New York City. Even though each musician
has their own distinctive sound, they share a common denominator, their love of Latin jazz. This feeling comes
across to the listener especially on the title track "Nuyorican Nights," which reproduces some great rhythms and is
a prime vehicle for Chris' art on the trombone.

Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Al Foster , Hutcherson gets things churning at a sizzling
pace with opener " Who's Got You?" which also sets the tone for the rest of the date . A must!

A Candid talk with a Gentlemen of Jazz
Danny Luciano: author of Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow ! The
Musicians, Times, & Places
Interview by Beatrice Richardson
Just a short walk through the corridors of time will put you in touch with some
of the most versatile musicians, vocalists, and composers who gave us what
the music world is proud to call the birth of Jazz.
What you find is, if music is the language of the world, when it speaks from
the soul..that's blues when it comes from the heart …that's Jazz.
If a guy makes you pat your foot and you feel it down your back, you don't have to ask anybody if
that's good music or not. You can always feel it.
