Kelly Willis What I Deserve
Once in awhile an album comes around that contains all the elements needed to make it an
instant classic. There also seem to be artists who continually are able to put these elements
together in numerous collections. Kelly Willis released three critically acclaimed albums on MCA
Records before parting ways with the label in 1993. Three years later Willis released a four track
promotional EP titled Fading Fast on A&M Records. The label went through a number of changes
and Kelly ended up leaving before a full album could come together. Another three years passed
before Kelly found a label that would allow Kelly to cut music her way. The result is a thirteen
track collection titled What I Deserve. The album proves once again that Kelly Willis is one of the
most incredible talents found in county music.
The soft acoustic verses and raging chorus of "Fading Fast," is one of the albums highlights. On
"Take Me Down," Kelly displays her vocal range letting her voice float on the chorus almost to
the point of cracking before pulling it back down to earth. Kelly's husband, Bruce Robinson is an
accomplished songwriter and singer himself and she selects a few of his best to cover here.
"Wrapped," is a mellow tune about falling hard for someone, regardless of that fact that you're
trying to get the person off your mind. The acoustic feel of "Not Forgotten You," is addictive and
would make a great follow up single.
The torchy ballads "Craddle Of Love," and "Time Has Told Me," are both memorable. "They're
Blind," is a incredible power ballad. I have played that song a thousand times and still aren't the
least bit tired of it. It just doesn't get any better. The smooth groove of "Heaven Bound," is a
personal favorite. "Got A Feelin' For Ya," is one of the strongest pieces of writing I've heard in a
long time. Amy Farris's talents are displayed well with the driving instrumental of "Happy With
That."
It's a rare occurrence when an artist records a flawless album. It's even less likely to find an artist
who can consistently record music at that quality level. What I Deserve is a timeless collection of
country music recorded by one of the most incredible vocalists ever to grace the genre. When the
smoke clears at the end of 1999 it's a safe bet to say this will be the most memorable record of
the year.
