Heather Myles – Highways & Honky Tonks

With the current state of the country music industry it is nearly impossible to find an album that contains pure country music. California native Heather Myles has done just that. In fact this is one of the most refreshing collections of music since the last Joy Lynn White record. Through the albums twelve tracks Heather Myles reminds us what makes country music so great and at the same time reminds us how far we have drifted from our roots. Luckily, she isn't willing to do the same.

Heather Myles wrote ten of the twelve songs found here and her writing is just as impressive as her deep, expressive voice. The debut single "True Love," is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. It's a shame that radio wouldn't give it a chance. It had potential to be a number one. In fact the same can be said about every track on this album. "Mr. Lonesome," is a fun, fast paced tune where Heather just lets her voice go. The unique feel of "Who Did You Call Darlin'," makes it one of those songs you can't help but play over and over again. "You Take Me Places I Wish I've Never Been," and "You're Gonna Love Me One Day," are other stand out tracks.

Highways & Honky Tonks doesn't slow down often but when it does the results are stunning. "Broken Heart For Sale," is a pure country ballad lined with steel guitar. Merle Haggard joins Heather in a rare duet titled "No One Is Gonna Love You Better." Haggard still has what it takes and Myles keeps pace with him every step of the way.

Myles also covers a couple of country classics. In fact they are the only two on the album she didn't write. In a gutsy move "Kiss An Angel Good Morning," appears on the album. I had my doubts but when the song came on they instantly disappeared. Myles has recorded a solid version of one of country music's classic songs. "I'll Be There If You Ever Want Me," the albums most aggressive vocal performance. Rarely does an artist come around who can breathe new life into classic songs. Heather Myles is one of those lucky few.

Heather Myles has recorded a timeless album. Highways & Honky Tonks is everything that country music should be. If you're a country music fan you can't afford not to have this album in your collection.
