October Festival features Billy Boy Arnold, Fruteland Jackson,

Ojai's Bowlful of Blues festival is entering its 17th year as one of the area's most popular cultural events, enjoyed by people of all ages. Staged in the beautiful and acoustically
excellent Libbey Bowl, home of the seminal Ojai Music Festival established in
1948, Bowlful of Blues features a wide variety of the world's finest
traditional and contemporary blues.
Examples of regional styles showcased at "The Bowlful" include,
country blues, West Coast blues, blues from Chicago, Texas, Louisiana and the
Mississippi Delta, as well as more specific styles such as New Orleans Rhythm
and Blues, boogie woogie, barrelhouse, Zydeco, Piedmont Blues, black gospel,
soul, R & B, Motown, blues/jazz, jump blues, Latin blues and Native
American, the first blues. The event is held the first Saturday of October from
2 to 10pm, with this year's date falling on October 2nd. A highlighted
attraction of the 17th annual will be a Blues Piano Summit, "Tribute to
Charles Brown," featuring Rob Rio, Jimmy Calire and other special guest
ivory ticklers.
Headlining will be Alligator Records artist, Chicago harp legend, Billy Boy
Arnold, one of the foremost practitioners of classic Chicago blues. Country
blues singer/songwriter and award- winning blues educator, Fruteland Jackson
will also be on hand from Chicago, with his performance and dedication to
preserving acoustic blues in its various styles. Additional acts appearing at
the Festival include the swampy, soulful sounds of the Jimmy & Mario Calire
Sextet, the country blues stylings of Bob Jones with Mr. Pete, French bluesman,
Paris Slim, blues/jazz vocalist extraordinaire, Mahli McGee, and local
heavyweights, Steve White The Barstool Pidgeons featuring Mike Fishell. Watch
for special mystery guest appearances as well at this year's Bowlful of Blues.
Finas Tasby is one of the special guests just added.
Authentic regional cuisine, refreshments including fresh Ojai orange juice,
vintage blues and jazz recordings and speciality booths round out the
festivities. Picnicking is welcome and in-and- out access throughout the day
allows for casual strolling about downtown Ojai before, during and after the
festival.
An After hours Party will be held at the Ojai Art Center, Saturday, October 2nd
from 10:30pm- 1:00 am, featuring the Barstool Pidgeons with special guests from
the festival.
Festival tickets are $23 in advance and $25 at the gate. Seniors (65+) are $15
at the gate only and children 12 and under accompanied by a parent are free.

Bowlful of Blues is a presentation of the Foundation of American Roots Music
(FARMusic), an educational, non-profit (501 C3) organisation working to bring
blues, jazz and roots music to Ventura County audiences and schools. This year
we are proud to announce two special workshops we are offering in connection
with the festival activities.
The first is a Country Blues workshop with award winning 'Blues in the Schools'
educator and musician, Fruteland Jackson on Thursday Sept 30th . The second one
is with Ethno-musicologist par excellence and Bowlful of Blues Master of
Ceremonies ,Greg Drust and "Boogie-Woogie King" Rob Rio. It will be a
symposium on the blues piano music of the 40's and 50's on Friday, Oct. 1st.
Both are to take place at Theatre 150, 918 E. Ojai Ave. at 7:30 pm. Workshop
