Chicago piano player has acute diabetes
8 Aug 1999:
Detroit Junior (real name: Emery Williams) has been in the hospital this entire
past week having an artery bypass surgery performed on one of his legs due to
his problems with diabetes. In the process, one of his toes was amputated.
Detroit Junior, in his early 70's, has been a figure on the Chicago blues scene
for more than 40 years. In the 1950s and 60s he was, on and off, the piano
player in Howlin' Wolf's band. Most recently he has been recording for Toledo,
Ohio-based Blue Suit Records and performing an early show as a solo on weekends
at the Kingston Mines.
Detroit Junior's best known recent recording has all been for Blue Suit
Records, and he may be best known for his song "If I Hadn't Got
High", which was released by Alligator Records in the 1980's on a compilation
recording called "Living Chicago Blues".
