Silverchair

Hailing from Newcastle, Australia, this aussie trio all began by getting together during 1992 in drummer Ben Gillies garage. With another supporting member, Daniel Johns, who then were known as Short Elvis. After shuffling through experimental rap music, later moving on to cover songs with the aid of instruments and new member Chris Joannou, it wasn't long before they came up with a few originals. In their vibrant and curious attempt to move forward, a chance broke through for this new band, formed as offspring's of such musical talents; Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Neil Young. By the advice of Daniel's neighbor they sent in a copy of their song 'Tomorrow' to an Australian radio station called Triple J, with little hopes of winning the reward of studio time for a CD, and radio play. Amazingly after three months, the lads received a call telling them they were the winners of the stations competition out of 800 other demos.

With the listeners request building up for the 14 year olds song "Tomorrow", silverchair became one of the most sought after bands of that time. Finally landing with Murmur records, the Australian division of Sony, also brining John Watson on as their manager. When they came to Festival Studios in Sydney to record their debut album 'Frogstomp' for nine days, they were there after offered the chance to tour with world renown band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, proving as one of the biggest experiences on silverchair's way up to 'Frogstomp' turning platinum. After careful consideration by the parents and management on behalf of silverchair's life style. The band later carried on with their second album titled 'Freak Show'. With unexpected twists of heavier and more complex riffs like that of "Freak" the first single off of this album. Followed by "Abuse Me" both video favorites of silverchair MTV watchers. However in the midst of this album, no one could neglect a new touch of orchestral music such as in "Cemetery" the softest ballad on the album became the new favorite and most requested song to be played live on the almost year long 1997 tour promoting "Freak Show".

Now in 1998, adjusted to fame, and done with school, the three members retreated to the beaches of Newcastle, Australia to spend time with their friends and family and to get back to their aussie child roots as surfers on the sunny Gold Coast. With fans all over the world held off for a year, the awaiting fans were assured by front man Daniel Johns, that he had been spending much of his time in a rented apartment, devoted to writing poems and later turning them into songs for their newly released album "Neon Ballroom" (once again produced, recorded and mixed by music guru Nick Launay).

As it's said, the third time is a charm, as was silverchair's third release. After years of determination, silverchair grew even more to be recognized, not as a one hit wonder but as a uniquely talented, child prodigy band. By introducing mixed styles of techno, rave, and classical symphony music on the underside of hellishly heavy guitar bits, thunderous bass lines which keep the music together, and massive drum beats only perfected by Ben Gillies into a cluster, and exerting it as modle masterpiecies of todays demanding music scene. In late February a little before the release of "Neon Ballroom" their newest single "Anthem For The Year 2000" came roaring up the music charts, not only on radio station play lists but previewed several times on MTV's 'Rocks Off' and '120 minutes'. This was an anthem that can reach both male and female and to be heard by all ages. With this song that can only truly be experienced live, one doesn't even have to read the lyrics to understand what the forcefulness of the opening chords and futuristic background noses are intended to prevail over the listener. Adding the New South Wales Public School Singers in the back of Daniel's matter of fact, yet warn full voice, adds to the image of how tightly packed and massive the move of today's youth contagiously becomes more aware of the increasing lack of freedom, and immense control Governments try to maintain over teenagers, and their ignorantly trusting parents. With a few tour dates during the release of this album, in Australia, USA, and Europe, the future of the full success of this album has yet to come.
