Sugar Ray - 14:59
Grade: B-
By Jess Redmon
Some may remember Sugar Ray from the days of old school, the hardcore tinged rockers who could put it in-your-face. It's not to say they can't do that anymore, a few of the tracks on "14:59" certainly do just that, but the vibe of keeping it real has taken a little more of a back seat to the hit making parade in this latest effort. After a hardcore metal intro that's sure to scare your mom, Sugar Ray starts things off with "Every Morning" (the enjoyable "Fly" type single) and "Falls Apart" (another contemporary hit single waiting to happen). From there, it's fairly mediocre music that has a nice vibe at times, but fails to be anything that really comes together. It's really not much of a progression from their last record, so if you liked that you'll probably like this, and to say "14:59" is bad is far from true, it's just nothing special. Mark McGrath have a lot of great ideas in this record, they just don't put them all together, so "14:59" is a bumpy road with a nice view.
