Joydrop - Metasexual
Grade: B+
By Andrew Robertson
There are some bands that can only do one thing well. Then, there are bands that do
many styles, but only average. Then, there are bands like Joydrop, which can run the
gamut of musical styles and come off no worse for wear. 'Metasexual' is an incredible
album that moves deftly from style to style but still all sounds like one album. It moves
from the churning rock sounds of 'Fizz' to the smooth-verse-hard-chorus 'Beautiful' to the
moody, atmospheric 'Breakdown' and beyond. 'Metasexual' even jumps styles within
songs, going from a slightly dark, synthesizer driven verse to a percussive bridge to a
chorus with a hook worthy of the best pop bands. The only other band I can really think
of who can do this as well as Joydrop does is Garbage, which is appropriate, because
the two bands are quite similar. Both work samples and synthesizers in with guitars in a
far more subtler way than most, and both having a female lead singer in a group where
the rest of the members are men. But I wouldn't call Joydrop the Canadian Garbage,
because that would do both bands a disservice. All in all this is one of the best of the
year, Canadian or American, but you won't get it all at first. Standing in the store
listening to it, but after repeated listens, you will absolutely love this album. There is so
much just under the surface. Go out and get this now, even if you have to get your local
record store to special order it for you.
